Osprey in Es Grau

A magnificent specimen of Osprey flying over the lagoon of Es Grau

The osprey (Pandion haliaetus) — also called fish eagle,— is a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey. It is a large raptor, reaching more than 60 cm (24 in) in length and 180 cm (71 in) across the wings. It is brown on the upperparts and predominantly greyish on the head and underparts.

This is one of the most emblematic birds of Menorca and at the same time more scarce.

It is estimated that there are four couples that nest on the island and perhaps some exemplary unpaired.

  1. Hello Enrique, back in the UK we are so so looking forward to the Ospreys returning for here for their breeding season. We visit their UK nesting sites between March and September before they fly over to Menorca and further to Senegal and Gambia. Magnificent birds!!. Les and Elaine Rider x
